It’s time for the annual Tucson bead, gem, jewelry, mineral, and fossil shows, starting at the end of January and continuing through mid-February. American gemstones have always been popular—think turquoise and quartz from the Southwest and garnets and rubies from the Southeast—but they’re in the spotlight now. There are beautiful. Some people have a hard time learning the brick stitch, while others find it to be one of the easiest bead weaving stitches. Many people learn flat even-count peyote stitch as their first bead weaving stitch, and for good reason: it’s a very versatile stitch, meaning that you can use it in many, many different ways.

The new book I received from Kalmbach Publishing contains some beading patterns is sure to inspire. The Big Book of Beading Patterns: For Peyote Stitch, Square Stitch, Brick Stitch, and Loomwork Designs are a compilation of the best patterns from Bead & Button magazine. There were two things I particularly liked about the book. This was the first book I got on bead stitching, and it's amazing that I ever continued with the craft. The instructions were TERRIBLE. Very poorly designed, difficult to decipher instructions made it impossible to figure out how to do the basic stitch, which incidentally is the brick stitch. The accompanying text was equally confusing.
